Economic Vitality

Our local economy is diverse. We are fortunate to have so many talented people living in Santa Cruz, but too much of our great workforce takes its skills over the hill. While improvements have been made to encourage economic development and job growth in Santa Cruz, more must be done to ensure roadblocks at city hall do not stand in the way of success. We also need to invest in new technologies, such as expanding broadband coverage, to encourage local entrepreneurs to start and grow their business in Santa Cruz. I will listen to local business owners and support our city’s economic development staff to ensure more people can earn their living on this side of the hill.

Public Safety

Our crime rate is too high, our streets are not as safe as they should be, and too many of us have been victims of property and violent crime. While I believe supporting our police with more resources to combat crime is essential, cooperation between our city, county, the courts, and social services needs to be part of the solution as well. We need more effective services for people who are willing to turn their lives around. While we cannot arrest our way out of the problem, holding people with dozens of arrests to higher standards through the newly launched Downtown Accountability Program is key to improving the situation.

Community Pride

Millions of people visit Santa Cruz because of our great attractions and beaches. Many enter our city on Ocean Street through traffic-choked roads. The entrance to our city is not attractive or welcoming, and certainly doesn’t signify we are proud of being the gateway to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Let’s work with the talented artists we have in Santa Cruz to not only create a welcoming gateway, but have artistically-placed messages along Ocean Street reminding people to pack their trash and other important information on being good ocean stewards when they are in town.
